JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE 

The Texas Tribune, Austin, TX; Center for Investigative Reporting, Emeryville, CA (April 2015-present)

-Investigative reporter and radio producer for both news organizations. Report and produce stories for the Texas Tribune and Reveal, a national radio show and podcast that airs on hundreds of local public radio stations across the country.

The Texas Tribune, Austin, TX: Reporter (July 2013-present)

-Reporter focusing on the environment. While writing for the Texas Tribune, also produced related stories for KUT-Austin, NPR, and PRI’s The World.

WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio and Connecticut Mirror, Hartford, CT: Reporter (June 2012-July 2013)

-Reporter focusing on energy, the environment, and transportation. Produce all stories for both Connecticut Public Radio and the Connecticut Mirror. Regular contributor to National Public Radio.

WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio and Connecticut Mirror, Hartford, CT: Reporting Intern (Dec. 2011-June 2012)

– Internships funded by the Connecticut News Project as part of a yearlong fellowship position. Reported and produced short news spots and feature stories for WNPR and the Mirror, focusing on social services (health and education)

The New Haven Independent, New Haven, CT: Reporting Intern (fall 2011)

-Internship funded by the CT News Project. Wrote stories on health, crime, city politics, and the arts. Pitched and wrote a series of stories on poverty landlords contributing to neighborhood blight in New Haven. One story was featured in ProPublica’s “Muck Reads” (see web site at neenasatija.wordpress.com/clips for link).

The Boston Globe, Boston, MA; Health/Science Reporting Intern (summer 2011)

– Internship funded by the Kaiser Media Foundation. Wrote in-depth stories on public health, consumer health, and the environment. Contributed occasionally to the Metro section for breaking news stories, including coverage of Tropical Storm Irene.

The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, TX: Reporting Intern (summer 2010)

-General assignment staff reporter for Metro department. Wrote stories on immigration, education, economic development, music, health, and politics.

The Blade, Toledo, OH: Reporting Intern (summer 2009)

-General assignment staff reporter. Wrote more than 40 stories over the course of ten weeks, more than a fourth of which appeared on the front page. Topics included crime, city/state politics, economic development, and the arts.

SKILLS

Computer-assisted reporting – Working knowledge of Excel and Access database programs for spreadsheets, presentations and data/statistical analysis. Introductory knowledge of Python and Ruby programming language for purposes of scraping data from the web.  Completed a week-long Computer-Assisted Reporting course at University of Missouri Journalism School in August 2012 through a competitive fellowship award from Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.

Graphics – working knowledge of GIS analysis software, including TileMill, QGIS, Google Fusion Tables, and Google Earth to create interactive maps

Audio production – working knowledge of sound editing and mixing with Audacity, Fission, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools 11 and similar sound-editing programs. Experienced in gathering tape for NPR-quality audio stories

Languages – intermediate Spanish
